Relaxation exercises are mainly achieved in the relaxation positions. This is because when the person is in a relaxed position, it will help in achieving better relaxation. The main positions that are used are lying and sitting. In standing, the legs are in a contracted position and so the patient will not be able to relax completely. The patient is taught to relax each of the parts of the body in a segmental manner and this is the reason for this being called as segmental relaxation.
