So, you’ve decided you’re ready to make your first appointment with a chiropractor but how do you choose the right one? Chiropractic is a broad field, which includes professionals who practice along a spectrum of different methods and philosophies. Not all medical doctors are the same and this is even more true of chiropractors, who may have very different ideas about your care.
The first and best place to start is with a referral from your primary care physician. Yes, that’s right. You can often get a referral from your medical doctor to see a chiropractor. Chiropractic care and mainstream medical care may not be from exactly the same background, but the two can complement one another and many medical doctors believe that chiropractic treatment is an excellent supplement to what they themselves offer their patients.
Before you request a referral though, there are some other things you should do. First, consider what exactly you are looking for from chiropractic treatment. Will you be seeking relief for a particular health problem? Make a list of those things you think a chiropractor might be able to address include any other issues you might have. You might be surprised by how much a chiropractor can do to relieve chronic pain (even if it’s not back pain), migraine headaches, or fatigue.
Second, do a little research on the different services and philosophies practices by chiropractic professionals. Not all chiropractors are the same, because some focus more on mainstream medical techniques while others make use of more traditional chiropractic philosophy. Neither is “best,” but you may find you have a preference.
When you do ask your doctor for a referral, you might request two or more names, so that you can call and do an initial consultation with each chiropractor before you decide which one to see.
