Ginger is a part of the Zingiberaceae family of tuber plants which also includes turmeric. Ginger was first cultivated in Asia and soon moved to Africa and the Caribbean’s. it is used in many forms in preparing various dishes. It is sliced, diced, minced and even boiled to make various items. Ginger can also be used as a preservative but ginger has many medical benefits too. In many cultures, ginger is sliced and boiled with tea and honey to make a worm solution which helps with sore throat and dry cough. Chemicals in ginger combined with honey, soothes the throat and provide temporary relief to sore and itchy throat.
Ginger has long been used to treat patients with constipation and other stomach symptoms. Components in ginger help patients easy their stomach problems and relieve the pain. It has been known to treat hear disease by lowering cholesterol as well as thinning the bloods hence decreasing the change of a hear attack. It is also a good remedy for arthritis and is known to ease joint pains with regular intake. The most common use for ginger has been prevention against nausea cased by morning sickness and chemotherapy.
A simple, easily acquired and inexpensive root like ginger has many uses that most of us are unaware of. Due to this reason this item has been used in cooking and ancient medicine in India, China and many other Asian countries. It is only recently that the western world is learning about the use of ginger. The older the root gets, the more concentrated it gets so for some people it is easier to use fresh ginger while other prefer it a little more ages to bring out that intense flavor. It is truly a magical root with so many uses and it seems that not everyone is aware of the benefits of using ginger in their regular diet.
