Chiropractic philosophy focuses on conservatism and homeostatis. Conservatism speaks of the risks of physical intervention in the body. This philosophy understands that using chemicals, artificial substance or surgery to overcome a health problem is never going to provide real benefits. So far, we have ample evidence that medical science, despite helping us overcome our health problems, is not really doing a good job at keeping us healthy.

The philosophy of homeostatis speaks of the inherent ability of the body to heal itself. Our body has the capacity of carrying out internal wear and tear maintenance activities. Take the example of clotting of blood. Once blood is exposed to the air, a series of steps are executed by the nervous system of the body. In all, more than 16 steps take place which result in the clotting of the blood. Had this simple procedure not being in built in our body, we would have bled to death because of the smallest cut.

Many persons scoff at such notions. How can the body repair a blocked heart on its own? It is only when stents are introduced that the blockages are removed. Well, to think of the extreme position as the first example is not a smart move. Take a look at a life where the individual does not focus on health and exercises. He or she is keen on earning money and does not care about anything else. In such a scenario, the seeds of the heart attack are sowed here. If a person takes care of health, there is a possibility that the body may prevent the blockage from occurring in the first place.

Are you of the opinion that alternative treatment solutions are a sham or a fraud? Do you feel that these solutions smartly criticize medical science and try to prove that such advancements are not good for society? Well, alternative medicine is not the best solution for our current lifestyle.

A person is expected to have such a lifestyle that he or she will never fall ill. On the other hand, we live a life filled with stress and other harmful experiences. In such a scenario, you are forced to go in for a solution that may not be the best in terms of holistic care but helps us overcome our health problems without any difficulty.

The biggest criticism of medical science that alternative treatment practitioners make is that it contains the seeds of its own destruction. The ultimate goal of medical science is to maintain the individual in good health. However, opting for surgical intervention inside the body is a solution that will, under all circumstances, create further complications.

You will have to be a very lucky individual to undergo surgery and escape its long term complications. The human body is often compared to a piece of cloth. If you refit a part and stitch it together again, you can never expect the original strength to be retained.

Today, we are looking at the harmful effects of science all around us. We have the ability to travel from one place to another at very high speeds but are not in a position to guarantee of our safety. The science that we follow is poisoning our planet and putting our life in jeopardy.

The Difference between a Physical Therapist and a Chiropractor

After an injury or vehicle accident, patients may see either a physical therapist or a chiropractor. In fact, a patient may see both, depending on the injury and the treatment recommended. When it comes to determining the distinction between the two, the main difference is that a chiropractor makes a diagnosis and determines what course of action needs to be pursued in order to remedy the problem.

Chiropractors work on the spinal column and the issues associated with it. After conducting an exam, and sometimes taking x-rays, they decide what needs to be done to relive the patient’s pain and get him or her back on track when it comes to feeling healthy. A chiropractor’s education begins with a bachelor degree and proceeds from there.

The Physical Therapist, on the other hand, is one part of a solution for a person that has experienced an issue or an injury. While they may work on some parts of the back, they can also assist with various parts of the body, working to get them back into shape. A primary care physician, a surgeon, or a chiropractor would refer a patient to physical therapy as part of a long- or short-term treatment plan.

While both professionals approach a patient from different perspectives, each one has the overall goal of the health and well-being of the patient in mind. Both are crucial parts of the medical industry and both individuals want to make a difference in the lives of their patients. In most cases, it takes a team of highly-trained professionals working together to help patients reach their full potential for healing.

Role Of Splints In Physical Therapy

Splints are used in physical therapy clinics because of the fact that they have many uses. The splints are used to protect a part of the body or they can be used in the treatment of a condition. Splints can also be used in preventing over stretching of some of the parts of the body. This is especially true about the limbs. The parts of the body that are injured can be protected in splints.

There are two common types of splints. One is the dynamic splint. This is the splint that allows some movement of some parts of the body, but a major part of the injured area is not movable. This is called as selective movement possibility. The other type of splint is called as the static splint. This is the kind of splint in which the person who is affected will not be able to move the injured area at all.

The application of splints is done mainly to protect joints. Some of the common splints that can be used are the cylindrical splint that is applied over the fingers, in case of needing to keep the interphalangeal joints in extension. The aeroplane splint is commonly used in case of burns. This is the splint that keeps the shoulder in abduction. This prevents the person from being able to adduct the hand as repeated addiction of the hand will cause contractures to occur.

The splints can be made from various kinds of materials. The physical therapy professional can use the creativity to create new splints too, that are useful for the person in the treatment of certain conditions. Some of the splints are made from wood. There are other splints that are made from cloth, but most of the splints are made from polypropylene and other heat mouldable materials as they are easier to convert into splints.

Advantages Of Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a separate branch of science. There are many people who select this as a career, mainly because of the number of opportunities that are available in this course. Some people are involved in patient care and there are many others who are involved in academic excellence. Some are involved in research in physical therapy. This is mainly because of the various advantages of physical therapy, as far as the patient care is concerned.

Many patients prefer physical therapy because of the lack of any side effects with this kind of treatment. The physical therapy treatment uses various physical methods of treating the person. These include use of heat therapy. The heat therapy is given for any person who is suffering from pain in the muscles or the joints. If pain killers are given to the patient, it can lead to toxicity and the person may have damage to the liver and kidneys. The use of heat therapy does not cause any toxic chemicals to enter the body. The person is also completely cured of the pain in most occasions.

Other than the heat therapy that is not causing any side effects, exercises are also used by physical therapists on most occasions to treat a patient. The exercises will help a person who has got a weakness in the hands or feet. This is because when the muscles are weak, then there can be loss of function. The exercises will help the person to add strength to the muscle. This will reduce the loss of function. Stretching the muscle will also help in preventing contractures. All these methods of treating the person and preventing complications are used in physical therapy without side effects.

Physical Therapy For Back Pain

Back pain is a common problem that is seen in people. There are many different reasons for back pain. It is being said that at least one in every three people have suffered from back pain at least in some point of their lives. The main reason for the back pain is the change in the posture of the person. The other common cause is the muscle spasm that is related to the stress. Preventing these problems and overcoming the pain is one of the major issues that physical therapists have to deal with.

The physical therapy professional will help the patient in identifying the right posture that will help to relieve the pain. There are many professionals like computer engineers and also other workers who are in a faulty posture that can lead to back pain. Ergonomics is very important to prevent such faulty posture at work. The physical therapist will help the patient in trying to attain the optimal posture. This can be done by verbal reinforcement, visual reinforcement and other methods. This will help the patient to be in a posture that is correct and will not cause back pain.

Stress is another common cause of pain in the back. When stress is the cause, the muscles are in a state of sustained contraction. This causes the spasm to cause back pain. Stress relief by learning relaxation exercises is one of the methods of treating the person who is affected by the disease. Other than all these, there is another method that can be used in the treatment of a person with back pain. This is the heat therapy. Heat that is applied in the affected area with the use of moist heating pads and other mechanisms will help to increase the blood circulation, leading to pain relief. This is the reason for physical therapy being important in treating back pain.

Physical Therapy For Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis

Image via Wikipedia

Plantar fasciitis is a condition that is mainly seen in people who are very active. There are many people who seem to be suffering from this problem. Plantar fasciitis is a common disease in people who stand for a long time. This is because of the fact that the repeated stress to the plantar fascia will cause it to become damaged. There could be the formation of some micro tears in the plantar fascia. There are times when the fascia could also become completely ruptured. This is mainly because of high stress injury. Any person who is involved in sports activities can suffer from this injury, if the person does not stretch the fascia before involving in the sports activity.

When an injury does occur to the plantar fascia, it can lead to inflammation in the area, which is called as plantar fasciitis. Though pain killers can be given to the person suffering from this condition, the most important treatment for the person is to use physical therapy treatment. There are various components of treatment by physical therapy. The first thing that needs to be done to help the person is to rest the area, protect it from further injury. Once the protection is done, icing can be given in case of an acute injury. To prevent excessive swelling immediately after the injury, compression bandaging can be applied over the area.

Splints are also commonly used to treat plantar fasciitis. This is because of the fact that there are many splints that will protect the foot and the fascia by supporting the structures. The person should also make sure that the splints that are supposed to be worn in the night are worn regularly. This will prevent the foot from being stretched to the extreme ranges and thus prevent further damage. Though the fascia should not be stretched to the extreme ranges, the treatment consists of mild stretching of the plantar fascia. This is because mild stretching of the area will help in preventing recurrent problems. These are the major treatments for plantar fascia with physical therapy interventions.

Is Your Back Covered?

Today there is hardly a family which does not have a loved one, a relative, a friend, or an acquaintance who isn’t suffering from back problems, whether it is around neck, shoulders, spinal column, glutes or the entire vertebrae.

With physical jobs being increasingly taken over by machines and humans spending an enormous time in front of their computers, TVs and iPads, the need for chiropractors is rapidly increasing. However chronic back problems require frequent visits to the local chiropractors, sometimes as often as once a week and this means middle class and working class individuals have to spend several hundred dollars at the rate of $50 to $120 per visit depending upon which part of the country, state, or town they live and the quality and abundance of chiropractors in their proximity.

Paying by cash or check without insurance coverage for chiropractors is not an option for most families and with depleting finances, mortgage payments, kids in college, and little savings, a better option is to look for a health insurance plan that includes visits to the chiropractor.

When looking to compare online insurance quotes, patients should look for several criteria. The amount of deductible they have to pay for each visit, the total monthly cost of insurance premium, the number of visits they anticipate will be necessary to advance healing and the degree of freedom or restrictions on which chiropractors one could visit.

When looking for a chiropractor, patients prioritize experience, personal chemistry/comfort level with the chiropractor, how convenient is chiropractor’s location and the cost of therapy. If the visits are to be frequent to chiropractor’s office then a plan which involves very low or no deductible is desirable even though the cost of annual premium might shoot up more than expected. On the other hand, patients who require as few as one or less than one visit per month might consider a 10 to 20 percent deductible but a much lower premium.

Small Steps to Staying Healthy

Many people today with bad health or bad habits are looking for things that they can do in their lives to make a change. Many times, they feel the need to start with a small change, rather than a life altering decision. There are many small steps that you can make to turn your life around and become healthier as you do it. Here are a few suggestions to give you an idea of things you can do:

  1. If you are a smoker, you could switch to using electric cigarettes instead of traditional ones. Though these still have tobacco, in the form of a tobacco and water vapor mixture, they also do not have many of the fillers and very bad chemicals that traditional cigarettes have. Though not as good for you as not smoking at all, these are much safer than smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.
  2. Increase how much you exercise every day and every week. Even if you walk around your block each day, this can significantly help your heart rate, weight, and more. Adding in a little bit of exercise at a time can help a person stay healthier overall.
  3. Checking in with your chiropractor at regular intervals can help as well. Even if you don’t have any known back problems, being treated by a chiropractor can help keep certain problems at bay. If you do have problems with your back, being seen regularly can help alleviate or fix those problems.
  4. When it comes to being healthy, what goes in makes a huge difference. Look for ways to improve your diet by finding foods to eat that are healthier. Adding in a few more veggies and fruits than you would normally eat, and cutting out the fast food a few extra times, can significantly help you keep your health in good condition.
